After dropping out of university she took a number of temporary jobs—bird observatory cook, auxiliary coastguard and women's refuge leader—before returning to university to train to be a probation officer. She started writing when she and her ornithologist husband were the only residents of the tiny tidal island nature reserve of Hilbre. There wasn't much else to do there.
